Equality and Inclusion Statement

At St Giles we aim to achieve Excellence and Enjoyment for All, and equality and inclusion are central to our school’s ethos. We believe that diversity is a strength, which should be respected and celebrated by all those who learn, teach and visit us. We welcome our duties under the Equality Act 2010 and are committed to eliminating discrimination, advancing equality of opportunity and fostering good relations.

We are committed to ensuring equality of opportunity for all pupils, staff, parents and carers and aim to develop a culture of inclusion and diversity in which all those connected to the school feel proud of their identity and ability to participate fully in school life.We tackle discrimination through the positive promotion of equality, by challenging bullying and stereotypes and by creating an environment which champions respect for all.

In all aspects of the school's work, we seek to:

  • eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation and other conduct prohibited under the Equality Act 2010, by promoting equality and dealing seriously with any discrimination, involving parents and where necessary external agencies
  • advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not, by making reasonable adjustments and removing barriers wherever possible
  • foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not, by leading by example, planning opportunities to collaborate and by celebrating all
  • consulting and involving those affected by inequality, through coffee mornings, newsletters and questionnaires

Equality and Inclusion in Teaching and Learning

We aim to ensure that all our pupils have the opportunity to succeed and to reach the highest level of personal achievement.

We do this by:

  • ensuring equality of access for all pupils and preparing them for life in a diverse society
  • promoting attitudes and values that challenge any discriminatory behaviour or prejudice
  • providing opportunities for pupils to appreciate their own culture and celebrate the diversity of other cultures
  • seeking to involve all parents in supporting their child’s education
  • utilising teaching approaches and materials which are inclusive and reflective of our pupils and the wider community

All members of the St Giles Community share responsibility for Equality and Inclusion.

Our Equality Scheme can be found here.
